ABOUT INDIA: India is a country that has a quickly growing film industry. With recently increased incentives for foreign productions, and a large population of local talent that want to work on your film, it just might be the next location for you. India offers a wide range of locations and diverse land mass, from tundra, to rainforest, to beaches. When planning a shoot in India, it’s important to factor the time of year and part of the country you plan to shoot in because of weather concerns. For example, in Northern India, November to March are the best months to shoot for weather and cool temperatures. Some parts of the Himalayan range are inaccessible due to heavy snow from November onwards, and road access does not usually reopen until June. The north is also subject to landslides during the monsoon season, but Southern India east of the Western Ghats remains dry during the monsoon period. INCENTIVES: As of 2023, India has enhanced incentives for film productions in the country. The Indian federal government will reimburse up to 40% of the production expenditure. The cap for reimbursement was also raised immensely, from INR 25 Million to INR 300 Million, In USD this translates to having gone from a cap of $300,000 to $3.5 Million. FACTS AND FIGURES: There is no shortage of soundstages, studios, and production locations in India. India produces almost double the amount of films annually compared to Hollywood, with Mumbai being a main epicenter of production. In central South India near Hyderabad, the Guinness World Record for largest film studio complex on the planet is held by Ramoji Film City. Here there are 1,666 acres of land and 47 sound stages. Located in Mumbai is India’s most well known production epicenter, Film City, which is the home of many Bollywood films. There are eight soundstages here, and 42 outdoor shooting locations.
